Irwin 1773631 9-Inch Oil Filter/PVC Pipe Pliers
These Japanese-made Fuller electrician's pliers served me well for about twenty years and were in good shape the entire time. In 2006 they left my possession when I replaced them with similar pliers made in the USA by Channellock (blue handles; made in Meadville, Pennsylvania). My intention was to donate these pliers to the local Salvation Army store, but an acquaintance heard about them and offered to give them a good home. The Channelock pliers were replaced in 2010 by a pair made by Kobalt and sold at the local Lowe's Hardware and Garden store.
I have an emotional attachment to Meadville because I once passed through there and almost lost my leather gloves during the passage.
Margerie Glacier, Glacier Bay, Alaska
This glacier is over a mile wide (1.6 km) and 250' (76 m) above the water line.
In 1791, Glacier Bay was a wall of ice when Captain Vancouver was blocked in his explorations by a wall of 2 miles (3.2 km) width and 4,000 feet (1,200 m) thick. 88 years later, when in 1888 John Muir had first visited the bay, this wall was 48 miles and had retreated by 44 miles (71 km). Now, it has retreated to 65 miles as a remnant of the old wall of the glacier system and has 16 major tidewater glaciers (10 and 12 were also mentioned in some references). Margerie Glacier is at Mile 63 of this system and named after French Geologist Emmanuel de Margerie who visited the area in 1913.
